Multi-functional Chemical Composite Recycled from Waste Ash

Technology Overview

Ash from power plants, such as coal ash or biomass ash, causes tremendous air pollution and mostly ends up in landfills as harmful waste. A start-up company has developed the technology and process to recycle waste ashes to reduce its harm. In the case of coal ash, harmful elements including F, Se, B, Cr, As, etc are removed using proprietary processes. The end-product is further re-utilised in the form of multi-functional chemical composite with numerous applications in providing environmental solutions for businesses. The proprietary process produces a porous and electric-charged chemical composites with a high ion exchange capacity: a Type-Na — used to adsorb harmful substances in air and water such as pollutants, odour, bacteria and viruses, and a Type-Ca — used to improve degraded or contaminated soil for agriculture use. 

The technology has been proven and utilised by a utility company in Japan and another company in Taiwan. The technology owner is interested in technology licensing collaboration with interested partners from Singapore. 

Technology Features & Specifications

The recycling technology transforms waste materials such as carbide, ash and other residues into a porous, electric charged material with high physical and chemical adsorption properties. The composite is used as an industrial adsorbent and is capable of removing toxic substances, heavy metals, radioactivity, fume and oil mists including ammonia, methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, methyl sulfide and trimethylamine among many others. 

The process removes heavy metals with nano/meso/micro porous formation by controlling growth of complex crystals, before adding plus/minus ion exchange functions. Compared to other adsorption materials such as zeolite and activated carbon, the chemical composite offers these advantages:

  • Recycled from ash, thus saving ash disposal costs
  • Lower production costs at 200-300 USD/ton (subject to the type of ash and production lines)
  • Better adsorption capability of harmful substances 

The technology provides a solution to local agricultural problems by recycling local waste in a circular economy. Unused waste materials such as carbonised plant residues (rice husk ash) and coal ash are recycled and utilised to prevent transfer of pesticides, heavy metals, radioactive substances and control ground water contamination. 

Potential Applications

Two types of the composites may be used for different applications. 

Type-Na is used for purification and decontamination purposes including:

  • Air filter for pollutants, bacteria and viruses
  • Odour deodorant and purification
  • Water treatment and purification 
  • Soil decontamination in agriculture including neutralising NPK fertilisation, heavy metals and radioactivity

Type-Ca is used to improve soil quality and other uses such as:

  • Soil amendment and optimisation for agriculture use
  • Fermentation accelerator for compost
  • Animal feed (biomass ash sources)
