Wheelchairs are used to assist users who experience mobility challenges to commute around different locations and environments. The design of the wheelchair reflects the functional needs of different tasks and environmental requirements. In many occasions, users have to switch between the manual and electric wheelchairs as they transit between the indoors and the outdoors respectively. This can be cumbersome due its bulkiness, weight and cost.
A modular docking and locking system is developed to provide flexibility for manual wheelchair users to convert their existing mobility device temporarily to an inexpensive power chair. A prototype is readily available for demonstration and industry validation is currently in progress. A provisional IP has been filed on the technology.
An adjustable adaptor providing smooth connection between a wheelchair and an e-scooter is fabricated using 3D printing technology, making the design works versatile. This adapter fits various wheelchairs designs and e-scooters, giving flexibility and convenience to users. The adapter aims to provide an alternate low cost solution for users to connect with ease on their own.
